Building Program: How It All Began
How It All Began
In 1993, a small group of Christians began meeting together to pray for a Calvary Chapel ministry in Lynchburg, Virginia. They desired the verse-by-verse teaching of the Word of God, combined with Spirit-led and Bible-based worship, for which Calvary Chapels are known.
In His sovereignty,
God also began to stir the heart of Pastor Troy Warner in Vista, California. Troy had previously been a long-term missionary to Australia with his wife Rebecca and had been on staff at Calvary Chapel Vista for four years. The Lord began to lead him to step out and begin a new work in a new place. As he prayed and sought guidance from the Lord, Troy found out about the group of believers in Lynchburg and realized that this was where God wanted to send him.
On August 1, 1994, Pastor Troy and his family moved to Lynchburg to begin the simple ministry of teaching through the Word of God and loving and leading a flock which, at that time, was only a handful of people in a living room.
Within a few weeks the church moved into a small office building off Timberlake Road. There was just enough space for a sanctuary, a few children’s ministry rooms, and what was lovingly called the “No-Room-For-Fellowship Hall.” But as the Word was taught, the Lord blessed the ministry with steady growth.
After ten years, it became clear that a major change was needed. A second service had been added on Sunday mornings and growth had brought all kinds of “good problems.” There was insufficient parking outside and too little room for fellowship inside. Knowing that God was more than equal to the task, the leaders began to pray and look for a new location.
As always, God provided. In 2004, Calvary Chapel Lynchburg relocated to the current Leesville Road location. The building provided plenty of room for continued growth. Amidst numerous building projects and changes, the building has been exactly what the church has needed to expand its ministry in Lynchburg and around the world.
